Another hit? Are you Tenno Heika or Nostradamus? Grin

No doubt it will be a hit financially on the strength of the Ghibli name (despite the neophyte Goro and the boring Takahata) and this is Hayao's baby. However, I hope it's better than Howl's...which was kind of a step back from Mononoke Hime and 2 steps back from Sen to Chihiro.

The worlds he weaves are just wondrous flights of fancy, but even masters have their bad day. I consider Howl's his "bad day" and this will sit atop my DVD collection when it sees a small screen release.

I'm a fan of Miyazaki, though I haven't even seen "Howl's..." so I can't comment on it. But reading about "Ponyo" it seems like Miyazaki really got himself invested in this project and it comes from the heart. "Howl's..." was, I gather, conceived as much as a homage to the writer and the books that he loved....

...whoah, I had a bosozoku doing spins at the junction outside my window just then. Never seen that outside my window before!!

Anyway...to be honest I think Miyazaki is at his best when the movie has a serious subtext rather than it being pure escapism/fantasy. "Sen to Chihiro..." was spectacular and all but it was one of those "oh, it was all a dream" type of anti-climaxes for me.

The first trailers will start appearing this Saturday. The movie itself is said to be about 80% finished.

Hm... Didn't look yet... And in general I like anime Ghibli studios.

I'm looking for Japan penpals or learning Japanese penpals. I like Japan. Especially it's nature. I like to make pictures, so when I'll arrive to Japan I'll do the pictures of nature. To the Japanese kitchen I belong with restraint. Probably because in Saint Petersburg little good Japanese restaurants... I like anime from Ghibli's studio. I like to read about Japan and I like stories of the Japanese writers (Yanusari Kavabata for example). I like different music (Queen, Moby, 50 Cent, Franc Ferdinand, Madonna, Gackt, Russian rock). I'm not a fan because I'm very old...
Mm... I like volleyball, films, aquarium's goldfishes, east languages (also culture and politic), beautiful old decorations of handwork, my city and talking with friends.

Love the fact that he's been dubbed as the japanese Disney. I love all the films and have all of the ones available in the UK on DVD and always get those Miyazaki urges lol

"Gake no Ue no Ponyo" will feature Amami Yuki (40) and Tokoro Joji (53) as the parents of the fish Ponyo who longs to be human. Yamaguchi Tomoko (43) and Nagashima Kazushige (42) will provide the voices of the parents of Sousuke, the boy she falls in love with. The lead roles will be played by youngsters Nara Yurina (8) and Doi Hiroki (8). Both kids already have several years of TV, stage and commercial experience but this is the first movie for both.

I continue to be mystified by the success of Kazushige's showbiz career. He was a flop as a baseball player, no doubt hindered by the legendary status of his father Shigeo, but he also seemed really stiff as a TV celebrity. He has loosened up quite a bit but I really don't see the appeal. I suppose he's a good-looking and easy-going guy, and maybe that helps explain it.

Ponyo opened last weekend and has got off to a very good start at the box office. The numbers for the opening weekend are better than or close to those for "Sen to Chihiro" back in 2001. Could it break the record?

The latest anime feature from Miyazaki Hayao (67) has got off to a flying start. "Gake to Ue no Ponyo" was watched by more than 1.25 million moviegoers over its opening three-day weekend, making almost ¥1.6 billion at the box office. The numbers compare well with those for "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi," Miyazaki's 2001 hit that still holds Japan's box office record. Among this year's domestic movie releases, so far "Hana Yori Dango Final" has been the biggest hit, making about ¥4.8 in the 24 days since it opened. "Sen to..." was also a major success overseas, winning an Oscar and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. So international interest is sure to be high for "Ponyo." Plans are currently underway for the movie to open in Asia within the year, with a U.S. release unlikely until next year. Meanwhile, the movie's theme song, sung by 9-year-old Ohashi Nozomi and middle-aged duo Fujioka Fujimaki, has made No.1 in the latest Oricon daily singles chart. The single first went on sale in December, but sources say only eight copies had been sold by February! That all changed as the publicity machine got into full gear and the movie opened last Saturday.
