"Welcome Sake" - Nihonshu question
10/30/09 at 11:26:32

I'm not so sure where else this question might go as there's not a food and drink subforum... so here we go Smiley

In the manga "Oishinbo" that there is reference to a type of sake that is served to guests as a "Welcome" type sake.  What is the untranslated name for this? Is it a specific type of sake/level of sake (junmai etc)?

If someone could explain that'd be great!

You'll be sure to find your answer over at Sake World, the site run by expert John Gautner.

Really, you asked and no one there knew? That's a surprise.

You're not by any chance thinking of 迎え酒/むかえざけ/mukaezake, are you? The name literally means "greeting/welcome sake." But it is more correctly translated into English as "hair of the dog." I assume you know what that means, but for anyone who doesn't it means having a drink to get over your hangover from the night before.
