Prime Minister Kimutaku

This from today's entertainment news:

Quote:
Any TV drama series that stars Kimura Takuya is sure to be popular and almost guaranteed the best time slot. But in the upcoming spring series from TBS, Kimutaku not only has the prime 9pm Monday slot, he even gets to be Prime Minister. The as-yet untitled series tells of an elementary school teacher who gets thrown into the political arena and becomes Japan's youngest ever leader. After decades of political mismanagement, the Japanese people are likely to tune in in large numbers to see what the country's top star can do when put in charge. The series once again joins Kimura with writer Fukuda Yasushi and the team who made "Hero" one of the most popular TV dramas ever. The movie spinoff was the most successful domestic feature at the box office last year.

Hmm, a Johnny's Jimusho star as the leader of the world's second-largest economy. He's been pulling in the huge audiences for well over a decade, but Kimutaku has been showing his acting chops in the last few years. With "Bushi no Ichibun", he showed that he can pull off a serious samurai role. And he held his own amidst a stellar cast as a young titan of industry in last year's "Karei Naru Ichizoku". In the new series, Fukatsu Eri is cast as the PM's secretary so it's hard not to predict some romantic developments there. But I'm hoping this new drama, despite it's fantasy-sounding storyline, is one that takes on some issues and isn't just a romantic comedy aimed at Kimutaku's legions of female fans.

By the way, I wonder how many of his fans have seen this old photo that I came across just now. Looking at this, there can't be much doubt that the guy has had plastic surgery.

I think that a moniker of hamming it up and mugging for the camera has to accepted in J-Dorama because it is very rare to find hardline TV drama that is going to be 100% cerebral and has appropriate levity at appropriate times.  It's a staple of the subculture that could only be done in Japan.  Could you imagine how fast William Petersen (Grissom on CSI) would lose credibility in Hollywood if he heard a piece of news, screamed into the camera in an over the top fashion, and did a clown face just 3 inches from it?

As for the show having the possibility of being a romantic comedy, I can very well see this as being like the Michael Douglas movie, "The American President".   Also, as much as celebs like to make fun of politicians here,  I don't think the writers and producers have the guts to pretend to show how the political job should be done.  Even in Hollywood movies of political fiction, the "hows" are rarely touched on.
