Yanki subculture information (please help!<3)

I'm very interested in the yanki subculture (like Arisa Uotani of Fruits Basket or Ichiko of Kamikaze girls, if you're not sure what I'm talking about...) so if anyone knows where I could find more info on them, please let me know! Thank you! <3

It may sound very dismissive and narrow-minded but I think the whole "sub-culture" of yankii's, bosozoku, chinpira and the rest are just a waste of space. Don't want to fit into society and play by its rules, fair enough. But once you start messing up other people's lives, causing trouble for "ordinary" people, then you're just worthless street trash. Seriously, these people are one of the few things that still consistently piss me off about Japan. They act like they're all oppressed and some sort of social minority group - that may fly for the gangstas in the US or Europe, but here it's just BS.

^^ Thank you for your response. I can definitely see why you don't like them (the 'gangstas' here in the US are just as bad, I'm sure), but I find them interesting anyway... I appreciate you taking the time to respond. The reason I was asking - maybe I should have said so earlier - is because my friend and I are planning on doing a Kamikaze Girls cosplay next spring at Animazement (my friend wears lolita clothes anyway... she is as we speak Happy) and I want to really get into my character and try to grasp who and what she is. To do that, I think I ought to further my understanding of yankis. Just going off of Fruits Basket and Kamikaze Girls isn't really teaching me much (though it gives me the basic idea of their behaviors and such).

Again, thank you! Happy

Yankee/yankii is the word used to describe... what would we call them in English? Juvenile delinquents? They'll usually have their hair dyed (badly), dress in deliberately unfashionable clothes (anti-fashion statement?), either chain smoke or chew gum, squat on the sidewalk or outside convenience stores or other gathering places, talk rough, get into fights, have snotfaced kids with mullet hairdoes (or worse). And that's just the girls! Actually the word is used for guys or girls.

Actually, this reminds me that Kersten could save herself (and her friend) a lot of time by getting the movie 下妻物語 (Shimotsuma Monogatari/Kamikaze Girls) available from YesAsia, which is about the friendship between a lolita girl and a yankii. Perfect research material. And it stars two of the most popular actresses of the day, Fukuda Kyoko and Tsuchiya Anna.

This page of manga art has a yankii girl image (bottom pic).

For info on the origins of the word in Japanese, see this ンキー_(不良少年)]Wikipedia page. You'll often see people on TV described as 元不良 or 元ヤンキー, meaning they are reformed delinquents. They're the only ones who can "get through" to the troubled youth of today. Blah, blah, blah. This guy is one example (they even call him Yankii-sensei!).
