Yes that IS worrying, because of how it goes so exceptionally straight against both culture and ethical norms.
Its usually not easy to get people to take such severely and obviously disliked action.

Though some here compare these groups to neo-Nazis, sociologists say that they are different because they lack an aggressive ideology of racial supremacy, and have so far been careful to draw the line at violence. There have been no reports of injuries, or violence beyond pushing and shouting. Rather, the Net right’s main purpose seems to be venting frustration, both about Japan’s diminished stature and in their own personal economic difficulties.

Im afraid i cant agree with that difference either, because in Japan, this IS aggressive.   And willingness to ignore regular norms and limits completely and ruthlessly in one way is often a prelude to doing it another way as well.

Mr. Sakurai admitted that the group’s tactics had shocked many Japanese, but said they needed to win attention. He also defended the protests at the Korean school in Kyoto as justified to oppose the school’s use of a nearby public park, which he said rightfully belonged to Japanese children.

Wow, thats so DUMB!   Just the kind of crap and failed thinking you find with neonazis...    Cheesy

Hello,
The website you have suggested don't have the part time jobs site, please suggest part time jobs site. Thank you.

Both GaijinPot and JapanEnglishTeacher do list part-time jobs:
https://jobs.gaijinpot.com/
http://www.japanenglishteacher.com/

Perhaps you might have better luck with these:

http://www.daijob.com/en/   (only has a few PT jobs)
https://www.findjobsinjapan.com/
http://tokyo.craigslist.jp/
http://www.perkle.com/

Are you asking for a site that lists "only" Part-Time/アルバイト jobs? I don't think there are any in English and the ones that I know of are in Japanese only:

http://weban.jp/
http://baito.e-aidem.com/

6  General / Japan in General / Little League Numbers

Being a former 2nd baseman,I enjoy the Little League World Series when the Japanese kids are involved. Watching these 4ft something 90 pounders take on California and Texas giants is an event. Some of these kids are 6ft and 200lbs !! Can a mastery of fundamentals overcome such a disadvantage? Makes for an interesting game.

What bothers me are the uniform numbers. The uniforms are given out by the organization based on size, and I guess without regard to any numbering system. It blows me away to see Japanese kids wearing #4 or #9 or even #10 for that matter. It's amazing the parents go for that. Now I'm gaijin, but my kid would never wear these-not here, not in Japan, not anywhere. What's the world coming to????

I don't think it's fair to label all young Japanese "slackers" (sometime also referred as ほど ほど 季節/Hodo Hodo Zoku) but as in most countries, you are bound to run into those that take life not so seriously.

The Service Industry is rough work and most of these kids/workers probably are フリーター/アルバイター part-time workers who are basically just doing the work to get play money and don't intend to make this a long-term job.

That being said, I don't condone poor work habits and if these guys were blatantly being sloppy then they should be fired.  I kind of find it hard to believe that place was unkempt (even for a MacDonalds) as someone would surely have complained about it, especially if it was in a major Tokyo area like Shinjuku, Akihabara, Ikebukuro etc.   Perhaps this was in a smaller town or prefecture?

Here's an interesting article talking about the "Hodo Hodo Zoku":

Speaking of MacDonald's, this video made me laugh albeit it's a bit morbid at the end:

Don't see Ronald that much in the American Commercials, although he does still appear a lot in the Japanese CMs.

One of the best guides to all thing Japan is Japan-Guide which has a lot of good and useful information.  The forums here are a good place to research topics that aren’t covered in other sites.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e623b.html

Top Hot Spots in Japan –

http://bento.com/tokyofood.html - For reviews on all the best places to eat in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

http://www.mustlovejapan.com/feature/hip_cities/ - For information on the top hot trendy spots in Tokyo

Virtual Guide -

If you are interested in a virtual tour of some of the major tourist spots you can go to the following website which gives you a street-level 360 panoramic view of the city.
http://www.360cities.net/area/tokyo

Volunteer Tour Guides –

TokyoFreeGuide has a service where local university students and/or ex-pat foreign nationals are available to help guide you through Tokyo and specific areas.  Most speak Japanese and English fluently and can also act as translators.  Tips are not required but parties may need to pay for food, travel and other admission fees associated with the guided tours.  They do need up to three weeks advance notice of the trip.  - http://www.tokyofreeguide.com/

An article about their service was featured here: http://travelhappy.info/japan/tokyo-tour-guide-for-free/

Expenses/Costs -

Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world (rivaling New York and London in general product costs).  Research prices of everyday items and services before you go to get an idea of how much you are going to be paying for items.  One site that might be useful is PriceCheckTokyo which you can use as a guide.  Please note however that this website may not reflect the most current costs of items in Japan:

http://www.pricechecktokyo.com/

Onsen Recommendations –

One of the best places to find information and recommendations on good “onsen” (Japanese Hot Spring) is
http://www.onsenjapan.net/  which has a fairly impressive listing of most of the major onsen in Japan as well as local favorites.  Includes prices, photos and short descriptions of all the onsen covered.

Customs and Etiquette-

Just because you’re visiting from another country, don't expect the Japanese to be understanding of cultural faux pas. Get a head start at being familiar with Japanese customs and etiquette as this will impress those that you meet during your visit:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customs_and_etiquette_of_Japan

Public Transportation -

The JR and transit system can be so confusing so it is a good idea to be familiar with your travel options including JR and subway routes:
http://www.japanvisitor.com/index.php?cID=374&pID=800&cName=Japan%20Travel&pName=travel-within-japan&PHPSESSID=75cc0ff77faed6531e035ab222d48070

Also take note of prices on the JR lines:
http://www.japanrail.com/JR_japanrailpass.html

If you will primarily be in the Tokyo area then you are may want to visit the Tokyo Metro webpage for information on how to use that system including using the new PASMO electronic card system:
http://www.tokyometro.jp/global/en/index.html

Important Numbers -

Carry a list of important service phone numbers just in case you need help or run into trouble while in Japan. There are English speaking services available:

http://www.japanvisitor.com/index.php?cID=374&pID=748

Cell Phones -
You will not be able to make it in Japan without a cell phone (keitai).

The "big three" cellular carriers in Japan are Au KDDI, NTT Docomo and Softbank. NTT Docomo is the largest of the three but Softbank boosts the most subscribers:

au KDDI  - http://www.au.kddi.com/english/
NTT Docomo - http://www.nttdocomo.com/

Like her folk/new music contemporaries 松任谷 由実 (Matsutoya Yumi AKA Yuming), 井上陽水(Inoue Yosui), 竹内 まりや (Takeuchi Mariya) and 杏里 (ANRI), 中島 みゆき (Nakajima Miyuki) has enjoyed a very long and successful music career in Japan with such classic songs such as 空と君のあいだに, 旅人のうた and わかれうた.  In fact, she'll be releasing her 37th album in October called 真夜中の動物園 (Mayonaka No Doubutsuen/Midnight Zoo).

Here's one of her most recent singles - 愛だけを残せ/Ai Dake O Nokosu.

Nothings 'wrong' with Texas, it was more a joke.
But people here are wrigth if they say that espeacilly Texans are often not very tollerant, pretty prude and closed-minded to anything non-american.
Hey Texans, where does that image come from? You gotta work on that!

And at the same time, i´ve got more friends in Texas than in the rest of USA, despite that i often quite severely "rub americans the wrong way"...    Smiley

"Many" still isn't "all". Either guys like Ozawa, Miyazawa, and Ishihara are woefully ignorant in their generalizing and bigoted comments or they have no concept of the power of adverbs.

My guess is that this is more about cultureclash than anything else.

And through that extreme oversimplifcation you just made yourself look "simple minded"(no offense intended in any way).    Wink

I think the popularity of people like Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly is evidence enough that there are a significant number of Americans who do fit the stereotype.

Oh dear yes.   Just go to any forum dominated by americans that have a decent amount of political discussions and there is no longer any question of why the stereotypes about americans exists.

Fortunately they are (for now) in the political minority.

Indeed!

Whereas in Japan, there are significant numbers of people who are, let's say, absent minded. Or who are incapable of learning from the past decades of political wheeling and dealing and would consider choosing one of Japan's most prominent "insiders" as PM.

I doubt one could come up with any country that you cant come up with less than nice stereotypes for.   I know i can certainly do it for my own country!    Cheesy

Even something as mind-blowing as the first Star Wars movie was in its day, you'd see through all the blue screen effects and miniatures now.

Myself, i actually have a lot more problem with all the CGI nowadays.   With miniatures you couldnt do things that made the end result look strange, and because it was real models, you got a "real feel" about it.
3/4 of todays CGI just looks unrealistic and all too fake.    Sad

Quote:
Looking back at the old episodes now, it's almost embarrassing that I got so into it and believed in it.

Well i guess you as myself look at the story first rather than little things like acting quality or such...    Cheesy
Let me guess, you dont like movies using shaky cam to create artifical "action"? (my friend thinks its realism, i think its shoddy and cheap moviemaking)
The original series has a fairly good feel about it, that goes a long way.

Quote:
I haven't watched a Star Trek episode in decades but I'm sure I'd cringe at that, too.

Dont bother watching the ST latest movie...   Calling it "bad" is like saying an ocean is slightly wet.

Quote:
I guess my point is that I wonder how much of a subconscious suspension of disbelief there was watching those shows back in the 60s and 70s.

Yeah, there´s actually an advantage in not always trying too hard (on the part of the moviemakers), as seeing "someone telling a story" most people will unconsciously "suspend disbelief" more than they would if the movie is trying to "be the story".

Quote:
Whereas now, as CG effects have become so incredibly realistic, it would be harder for young kids to be able to make that distinction. They don't hve to suspend disbelief because it looks so utterly real.

I really doubt that...   I know even my nearby 2 year old son of a cousin can already tell CGI from real most of the times, even quality CGI.   I think it might be more an acceptance for the usage of CGI as the medium for telling the story.
Just like we can accept outrageous things from regular old cartoons in a similar way as we can read old fables.

When CGI was poor it badly lampshaded that movie=fake trying to look real, but for kids today, they accept it in a different way even though they can see its fake.   In a way similar to how you suspended disbelief with Dr Who once upon a time in a galaxy far far away.    Wink
